Virtual Desktop

Need to use your home computer for work? Request a personal virtual desktop to use it for work needs — without needing a VPN.

Shared Desktop

Accessible from any device, and provides the ability to access UABFile and Network printers. Shared desktops are equipped with Microsoft's Office suite including OneDrive for file syncing and sharing. Data saved outside of OneDrive or the Documents folder is automatically deleted every few days.

Personal Desktop

Provides functionality exactly like a traditional desktop computer and can be accessed from any device. All user-installed software on this Virtual Machine will be permanent, as will any documents saved locally. For Desktop supported customers, all network drives and printers will map automatically.

Departmental Desktop

Provides a shared environment that can be used to run applications that are normally installed on individual desktops. This allows the applications to be updated one time for everyone using it. This option allows multiple users to be logged in at one time, and each will have their own profile and settings. Request a departmental virtual desktop.

Published Application

Similar to the Departmental Desktop option with one main difference. Instead of a user having a full desktop experience when logging in, they are only presented with a single application window. A department can request multiple applications be published.

Why use VPN on UAB?

VPN are used to connect remote users to UAB campus resources that are restricted for reasons of security and/or licensing constraints. You authenticate using your BlazerID and password in order to be authorized as a UAB network user, and the software should automatically download.

UAB Computers Taken Home For Remote Work

If you take UAB/HSF computers home for remote work, please ensure that you have proper approval from your supervisor. You can submit your request at https://redcap.dom.uab.edu/surveys/?s=DCHKDW3R4T

Antivirus Tools

Your office computer should already have an Antivirus software managed by DOM IT or your primary IT support provider. It’s extremely important to have Antivirus on your home computer as well. UAB IT recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for PCs and SOPHOS for MAC.

Other Software Packages

UAB offers free or heavily discounted software packages (i.e. Microsoft Office, EndNote, Adobe) for its employees, even for home/personal computers. UAB VPN

VPN software is necessary for certain UAB core/central applications. You can download UAB VPN from uab.edu/vpn. Installation instructions can be found there as well.

How long does a Blazer4Life email last?

You’re a Blazer4Life! Which means you can keep your BlazerID​@uab.edu email address forever. Your mailbox will be retained for 1 year after leaving UAB, but you can add in a forwarding address to have your BlazerID​@uab.edu emails forwarded to another account you can access. Learn more about this process here.

When will UAB disable authentication?

Disabling basic authentication. On March 5, 2021, UAB IT will disable basic authentication to Office 365 and require modern authentication, which is capable of two-factor authentication and would allow users to log in with Duo, providing more protection for their accounts and data.

Does UAB have email?

Office 365. UAB provides email for students, faculty and staff through Office 365, which means you get access to not only email but calendaring, contact management, task management functions and the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, all by using your BlazerID and password.
