What is the Georgia Tech VLab?

The VLab provides Georgia Tech students, faculty and staff a way to access a Windows Desktop with the software listed below from any computer with Internet access. It is similar to having remote desktop access to an IAC lab computer with specialized software used in IAC's various disciplines.

What is remote desktop access?

Remote Desktop access is a way of accessing and controlling your office computer's desktop as if you were sitting in front of it.

How to connect to campus from off campus?

To connect from off campus, you'll need one other step... VPN or Virtual Private Networking is a way to connect to the campus network and attach your computer to it as if it were on the campus network. This allows you "inside the gate" so that you can access things that are not made available outside of campus.

Can you access a piece of software remotely?

Sometimes you may just need to access a piece of special software remotely. Many software applications provided by the college or its schools are available remotely via the Virtual Lab (VLab) system and the IAC Stats Server.

Can you use Remote Desktop outside of campus?

Yes, you can share a file to collaborate with your colleagues and other GT students. Usually, the share button is on the top right of every application. You can either add the collaborator's email to the pop-up window or send the file as a pdf to the email added.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff can access any of the servers listed on the Academic Labs Linux Machine Names page from off campus (i.e., from any Internet Service Provider (ISP)) or the GT wireless network after connecting to OIT’s SSL VPN Service.

How many semesters does it take to get a certificate in Georgia Tech?

Most students will complete one course per semester, so the certificate will take four semesters to complete. Core courses will be offered in Georgia Tech’s fall and spring semesters, but elective courses may also be available in Georgia Tech’s summer semester.
