What is the purpose of Belmont Public Schools?

Purpose. The primary purpose of the Belmont Public Schools Computer Network (“the Network”) is to support the educational objectives of the Belmont Public Schools and Belmont's educational community in general. Network use provides valuable opportunities for research, curriculum support, and career development.

Network use provides valuable opportunities for research, curriculum support, and career development. The Network is not a public forum, and the Belmont Public School system reserves the right to place reasonable limits on materials posted or accessed through this network.

Can students upload to the internet?

No student may upload or download material to or from Internet sites without permission from their teacher. Students shall not access, upload, download, transmit, or distribute material that is pornographic, obscene, sexually explicit, threatening, discriminatory, intimidating, abusive, harassing, or offensive.

Does Belmont School require signature?

This policy does not require a signature as it is referenced in each school’s student handbook. Adopted by the Belmont School Committee, May 4, 2010. Revised form adopted by the Belmont School Committee, January 18, 2011.

Is Belmont Public School a private school?

All communications, regardless of content or purpose, are public and are not private .

Can you share passwords with students?

Network IDs and passwords are provided for each user's personal use only. Passwords should not be shared with anyone. Students must not use another person's password. If you suspect that someone has discovered your password, you must have it changed immediately.

Can students use chat rooms in Belmont?

Students must not access chat rooms or social networking sites. Students are also prohibited from using the Network to blog or to send or received instant messages. Games must not be played, accessed, or downloaded. The Belmont Public School System will take reasonable precautions to filter out inappropriate materials; however, it is impossible to monitor all content.

INTRODUCTION

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secured private network that provides a secure encrypted connection, or tunnel, over the Internet between an individual computer/device and a private network such as the Belmont University Campus Network.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to state the requirements for remote access to computing resources and data hosted at the university using VPN technology.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all VPN users of computer and network resources owned or managed by Belmont University.

POLICY

This policy provides the security requirements for all Belmont University employees who are manipulating and/or accessing university data classified by the Data Classification Policy as level 1 or 2 confidential information from remote locations using VPN technology.

REQUIREMENTS AND PRACTICES FOR ALL REMOTE USERS

Belmont employees and authorized third parties using the VPN must ensure that unauthorized users are not allowed access to internal university networks and associated information or data.

COMPLIANCE

Violations of this policy will be handled according to normal disciplinary procedures. However, a user’s IT use privileges may be temporarily suspended by LITS prior to the initiation or completion of these procedures when there is a reasonable basis to believe that an individual is in violation of this policy.

RELATED STANDARDS, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES

The Remote Access Policy is administered through a collection of Belmont standards. The Belmont University Remote Access Policy and its standards are in effect at all times.
